Want to host your own Victorian Tea Party?
Here are some ideas:
- The Tea: Have various types of loose-leaf tea, a tea kettle to boil the tea on your range, a teapot and strainer, a tea cosy to cover the teapot when you are brewing the tea inside, a sugar bowl (use cubes for effect) and a creamer. Be sure to include some classic teas such as an English Breakfast or Earl Grey. Research beforehand the proper way to brew and serve tea to your guests.
- The Sandwiches: Make dainty, crustless finger sandwiches, such as cucumber, egg mayonnaise and watercress, ham and mustard, cheese and pickle, chicken curry, etc.
- Use a pretty pink or purple tablecloth.
- Search your local thrift stores for pretty and dainty cloth or lace placemats, table runners and napkins.
- Arrange a colorful vase of flowers as your centerpiece.
- Or, make a cake, such as a classic Victoria sponge, and put it on a tall cake stand in the middle of the table.
- Other food options include: French macarons, petit fours, profiteroles, mini pies or cakes, hors d’oeuvres, etc.
- Use your nice china! That’s what it’s there for! If you don’t have any nice china, search your local thrift stores for a set, or odd pieces of small plates, teacups and saucers.
- Search your local thrift stores for pretty serving dishes, tiered servers, and a cake stand.
- Set the stage: Before your guests arrive, set the table as elegantly as possible.
- Play games, such as a Victorias trivia game, charades, outside crochet, etc. Have prizes for some of the games.
- Have everyone bring or select a poem to read.
- Have your guests dress up in their best Victorian outfits and hats! So much fun!
